DNA tests examine up to 21 specific points in our genetic code. Each point is looked at separately, and their information is used to calculate a paternity score.
When a lab has scores for all the points, the technicians combine them to find the overall paternity score, which is called the Combined Paternity Index (CPI). This helps determine the likelihood of a biological relationship between individuals.
What is the Combined Paternity Index?
The Combined Paternity Index (CPI) is a number we get by combining scores from different parts of our DNA. These scores tell us how likely it is that a person is the parent of another person.
A lab will look at 20 different parts of the DNA, and each part gets its own score. Then, it will use these scores to calculate the CPI and determine how likely the parent-child relationship is.
The lab technicians don’t use the 21st part of the DNA to calculate this because it helps them check if the samples are mixed up. If someone accidentally mixes up the samples, they can tell by looking at this part of the DNA.
What is The Probability of Paternity (POP)?
The Probability of Paternity (POP) is like a percentage number. It’s the easiest part of the paternity test and helps you quickly know if the tested man is the child’s birth father.
- If the POP is 99.99%, the man is likely the father.
- If the POP is 0%, the man is not the father.
Interpreting the DNA Results
If your report says: “The alleged parent is not ruled out as the possible father of the child,” it means that when they checked the DNA, the numbers matched between the child and the alleged father. This suggests that the tested person could be the child’s birth father.
But because they have yet to test everyone’s DNA in the world, they can’t be 100% sure. Instead, they give two numbers to show how likely it is. If these numbers are high enough, it gives us a strong answer about parentage.
To be considered the child’s parent, the first number (Combined Paternity Index) should be bigger than 1,000, and the second number (Probability of Paternity) should be higher than 99.9%.
Your report also includes a table showing each person tested’s DNA markers and alleles. In the example below, you can see that the child has a match at each of the DNA markers with the alleged father.
If the report says: “ALLEGED FATHER’S NAME is ruled out as the father of CHILD’S NAME,” it means that when they looked at the DNA, the numbers didn’t match the child and the alleged father. This shows that the tested person isn’t the child’s birth father.
For someone to be a biological father, their DNA must match the child at all the DNA points they tested. So, if even one point doesn’t match, they can’t be the father. Your report will tell you how many points didn’t match between the alleged parent and the child.
The report also has a table that shows the DNA points they checked and the numbers for each person tested. In the example below, you can see that the child doesn’t match at two points with the alleged father.
Even though the child matches at one point (highlighted in red), this is like a coincidence, just as two unrelated people might have the same eye color or hair color.
